Dating ads on Facebook and Instagram are allowed, but only for advertisers that have Meta's prior written permission. Get that part wrong and nothing else matters: ads get rejected, accounts get restricted, and a dating app that depends on Meta for growth stops overnight. Get it right, and Meta is one of the strongest channels for mainstream dating, thanks to its scale and its age and interest targeting.
This guide covers what Meta's dating ads policy actually says, how to request permission, and what our media buyers have learned about dating ad creatives that convert. It is written by Mobipium's in-house dating team, which runs paid traffic for dating advertisers in multiple GEOs every day.
Can You Run Dating Ads on Facebook and Instagram?
Yes. Meta's Advertising Standards place dating in the restricted goods and services category. Ads that promote online dating services are allowed only with prior written permission from Meta. Once an advertiser has permission, Meta allows ads that promote:
- Online or offline dating.
- Romantic meetups.
- Dating facilitation, including dating profile management and dating aggregator services.
Every ad for online dating services must target people aged 18 or older, and must follow Meta's Community Standards and Advertising Standards as a whole, including the policies on adult sexual solicitation, adult nudity and sexual activity, and fraud, scams and deceptive practices.
What Meta's Dating Ads Policy Prohibits
| Not allowed | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Dating based on monetary or financial transactions | No "mail order brides" or paid companionship angles |
| Offers to facilitate affairs or infidelity | No "married but lonely" or "discreet affair" positioning |
| Relationships with fictitious groups or people | Creatives cannot suggest users will meet or connect with people who do not exist |
| Sexually suggestive emphasis in the creative | Nudity, sexual poses or copy that implies sexual encounters are out |
| Prostitution and sexual encounters | Covered by Meta's adult sexual solicitation policy |
Some related products do not count as dating ads. Meta allows ads for literature and entertainment about relationships, such as TV shows, games or documentaries about dating, and for social and meetup apps without romantic matchmaking elements, such as apps for making friends. Meta's policy page was last updated in June 2026, and it does change, so check it again before every new launch.
How to Request Permission for Dating Ads
- Fill in the information about your business. Your app or site, legal entity, privacy policy and terms must be live and consistent with what you will advertise.
- Request permission through Meta's dating application form, linked from the dating ads policy page and the Business Help Center.
- Use the approved assets. Run ads from the business, page and ad accounts named in the approval.
- Set 18+ targeting on every ad set and follow the dating targeting requirements.
- Keep creatives inside the standards. Permission is for the business, not a free pass for every ad.
What Converts: Dating Ad Creatives That Work
Policy keeps you live. Creative decides whether the campaign makes money. These are patterns our team sees across mainstream dating campaigns. They are starting points to test, not rules that hold for every app or market.
1. Start with the audience, then pick the point of view
For many mainstream dating offers in the US, the strongest audience is men over 40. For that audience, creatives shown from the woman's point of view, a woman on screen talking to the viewer, consistently beat ads that show a man using the app. The viewer should see the experience he wants, not himself.
2. A visible face is the first hook
The picture does the heavy lifting. Typography-only ads and minimalist designs underperform. People scroll dating ads looking for a person. A clear, natural face in the first frame stops the scroll better than any headline.
3. Ads should look clickable
Illustrated or poster-style concepts look nice in a presentation and fail in the feed. Ads that borrow the look of a native app interface, profile cards, chat screens or notification styles, get more clicks because they look like something you can tap. Keep the details honest: the people in your ads should be real users or clearly representative imagery, never a promise that a specific person is waiting for the viewer.
4. Give the photo context
One giant photo with empty space around it converts worse than a smaller photo with context: a short line of copy, a strong call to action, and a few profile details that explain what the user is looking at.
5. Use local cues lightly
A full national flag as background kills credibility. A small local badge, a local accent in video ads, or a familiar setting does the job. Localize the people, accents and backgrounds for each GEO instead of translating one master creative.
6. Write copy that is warm, not sexual
Copy about connection, conversation and meeting someone nearby converts and stays inside policy. Copy that leans sexual gets rejected, and even when it slips through, it attracts low-intent users who never pay.
Dating App Ads Formats on Meta
| Format | Best use | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| 1:1 static feed ad | Fast concept testing | Test structures, not only colors: single profile, grid of profiles, chat screen |
| 9:16 video for Reels and Stories | Scale and emotion | UGC style, real voice, face in the first second |
| Carousel | Showing several profiles or features | Each card must work alone, most users see only the first |
How to Test Dating Ads Without Burning Budget
- One campaign per GEO, even when several countries share an ad account. Each market needs its own budget and its own numbers.
- Same concept, local execution. Keep the winning idea and localize people, accents and backgrounds.
- Make variants really different. Five near-identical banners teach you nothing. Change the structure, the hook or the point of view.
- Set a CTR floor and cut fast. Every creative below your minimum after a fair number of impressions is replaced, not nursed.
- Test a range of age brackets. Individuals in different age groups respond to different faces, settings and copy.
- Read CPM together with frequency. Rising CPM at high frequency usually means creative fatigue, not a market problem.
Measure Results Outside Meta Too
Meta's reporting tells you what happened on Meta. It does not tell you who paid. Our team reports on its own tracking: clicks, registrations, conversion rate, EPC and lead to sale rate per campaign and per flow, with conversions passed back by postback. Margin and ROI are calculated from real revenue against ad spend. If you do not have that loop yet, start with our guide to the postback URL.
Meta is rarely the only channel. Push and native networks can bring dating volume at a lower CPL, as we showed in From 15 to 150 Dating Leads. For the full channel mix and the unit economics behind it, read our guide to dating app user acquisition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I advertise a dating app on Facebook?
Yes, with Meta's prior written permission. Ads must target users aged 18 or older and follow Meta's dating standards and general Advertising Standards.
What are the rules for dating ads on Facebook?
Dating ads need written permission, 18+ targeting, and cannot promote paid relationships, affairs, fictitious people or sexually suggestive content.
Why am I seeing dating ads on Facebook?
Dating advertisers target by age, location and interests. If you match an advertiser's audience, you may see their ads. You can hide an ad or adjust your ad preferences in Meta's settings.
Is Facebook Dating the same as dating ads?
No. Facebook Dating is Meta's own dating feature inside the Facebook app. Dating ads are paid ads from other dating services, run under Meta's advertising rules.
What dating ad creatives work best?
In our campaigns, creatives with a visible face, a point of view that matches the audience, and a native app look tend to outperform illustrated or text-only ads. Always test against your own data.
